It takes serious talent and dedication to make it all the way to retirement as a Pilot, not to mention outstanding physical health. Physicals are required at least once a year, depending on position, plane type, and the type of flight (international or domestic). International first officers have to have an ATP (Air Transport Certificate), which requires a first-class physical from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This happens every six months.

There are also annual company physicals. If a Pilot should fail any of these for any reason, he is let go. Pilots' schedules require them to be on duty for hours, and sometimes days at a time. They are assigned to a specific flight plan that changes constantly.

If he were assigned to a simple domestic routine such as a D.C.-Denver flight, Bradley might complete the round trip five times in a week. But if he were on the international track, it would require perhaps a seven- or eight-day trip sequence between Washington, D.C., London, and Chicago. He would repeat this pattern twice a month, and would do an additional domestic flight.

Pilots fly for the love of it, not for money, Bradley said. Salaries are based on longevity, position (1st officer, 2nd officer, captain), type of plane, and personal flight pay credits (FPC), a measure of hours worked.

Bradley explained that Pilots spend considerable time commuting and waiting between flights, so that a Pilot can be gone for three days and only get 10 hours of FPC. According to the Air Line Pilots Association, Pilots can expect to spend approximately $30,000 on Pilot certification alone (Pilots must receive 11 certifications/ratings). That's on top of receiving the now required college degree. Federal law requires Pilots to retire at age 60.

About the Airline Training Industry

Not all Pilots choose an Airline career. There are many other specialties just as rewarding. Other areas available are crop spraying, although I don't recommend it if you intend going the Airline route. Airlines prefer hiring pilots with multi-crew, multi-engine experience from structured environments. Nevertheless – it is well paid but obviously seasonal. Some crop sprayers alternate their work between northern and southern hemispheres to work all year long. Possession of a "Instructor Rating" will always assist you in gaining hours without any cost on flying, this also help you to maintain your license currency at all times... Contrary to popular belief, not everyone has the ability to become a professional pilot. In fact, some people shouldn't fly at all! Not because they can't fly well - but because they can't think well! Cocky, over-confident, egocentric pilots are not desirable and tend to be short lived in this job. The saying "there are old pilots and bold pilots – but no old bold pilots" is true. With the responsibilities and consequences involved, you...
One small tip – guard your reputation well! Airlines do their homework meticulously. Internationally this is a close knit community and if you have a reputation as a heavy drinking Casanova or a flamboyant show-off, you can rest assured the selection board will know about it before you arrive for the interview. Better have some answers ready!

So what are the perks of being an Airline Crew ? Again this is one of the top 10 questions that I am often being asked. Different airline have different perks and benefits but I am going to stick to Emirates since I was flying with them to give you all a general idea.

Do we have time to explore a particular country during nightstops and do sightseeing? The answer is yes. It depends on the frequency of the flight to that particular destination and whether it is short, medium or long haul. For short haul ( 5 hours and below) , we normally do the flight as a turnaround flight which means there are no nightstop as you fly there and return to base on the same day. For medium haul flights ( 9 hours and below) ,we get to stay in that country for between 24 hours up till 100 hours. If we have daily flights, which means we fly to that country every single day, the stay is normally 24 hours, for example, you arrive 8am today and leave at 8am the following day.

How much can a Cabin Crew/Pilot earn ?

As expected, this is also one of my top 10 questions that I am often being asked. A high or low salary definition differs from everyone depending on your background. For example, a couple of thousands may be high for a fresh 18 year old crew and not so high or even a pay cut for those that join say from a manager/supervisory post. For me, it’s is definitely high as my first crew job was right out of university.

So back to the title. How much can you earn as a crew? It of course depends on which and also what sort of airline you apply for whether it is private jet, full service airline or low cost airline. Well I am not going to talk to you about the difference between them as it will take an entire post to do so. Maybe next time.
